earth day

Friday April 22, 2011

There is so much I have on my mind today.

There is this incredibily beautiful film:

And then there is this documentary I am seeing on Saturday.

Also, Jake and I have been watching Human Planet on BBC and are completely obsessed with it. It is amazing.

I am more convinced today than ever before, that we are all intrinsically connected and our actions, decisions, and choices profoundly affect us all.

Sometimes the weight of that truth makes me sad — but most of all it gives me hope that my choices matter.

Earth Day is today, but for me it is every day.

4 hour body

Monday April 18, 2011

Last Monday Jake and I began a new way of eating, living, and thinking.

Enough is enough. We’ve been eating like crap for a few years and totally needed to restart our bodies and our minds about how we think about food and what we put into our mouths. The 4-Hour Body or Slow Carb Diet by Timothy Ferriss is the plan we are following and we are already seeing and feeling the results!

It’s pretty simple with all meals consisting of three components – protein, legumes (beans), and vegetables. You avoid anything white (rice, potatoes, pasta, bread, cereal, dairy, soy, etc) BUT one day a week you cheat and eat anything you want (cookies, ice cream, cake, scones, pizza, cheese, chips, fruit, pasta, etc). Take note that you cannot have fruit on this diet except for on your cheat day. Eat your heart out on your cheat day!

To be honest, the first few days were hard. I was like, “GIVE ME A COOKIE!!” But I stuck with the plan and did not cheat until my cheat day. Which is amazing considering the amount of cookies I consumed on a regular basis.

My sugar cravings have gone way down and I have felt actually full from my meals. But if I am craving something sweet I just grab a spoonful of almond or peanut butter and it usually does the trick. Another amazing change is with my allergies. I was starting to think I was allergic to my house because I was stuffed up and sneezy ALL THE TIME.  Sooooo, now I am thinking that either the dairy or the gluten has been the culprit. This is mind blowing to me and totally life changing. Plus, we are going to save a bundle on Kleenex cost.

Here are some examples of what we’ve been eating:

Breakfast (eaten within 30 minutes of waking up): 2 organic eggs, bean salad, 1/2 avocado or steamed broccoli or spinach; or 2 eggs, 2 slices of turkey bacon, bean salad; also, black coffee w/ cream

Lunch: Grass-fed beef stir fry, w/ bag of frozen Thai-style veggies (just throw it all in the wok – super easy), 1/2 cup or more of kidney or black beans or lentils; or 1 can of tuna w/ chopped celery and red onions, bean salad, 1/2 avocado; or Chipotle burrito bowl without rice

Dinner: Grilled chicken breasts, spinach salad w/ avocado and tomato, steamed or grilled vegetables (asparagus, green beans, peppers); or broiled salmon, lentils, and asparagus

Snacks: 1-2 glasses of red wine (which is allowed); or spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter (if I close my eyes and imagine it is a peanut butter cookie it helps and is totally delicious)

Found this blog and will be trying out some of their recipes this week.

And here is where I share my weight with the world:

Anne’s starting weight: 139.9
Weight after 1st week: 135.9

Jake’s starting weight: 180
Weight after 1st week: 177

Only exercise has been daily 20-40 minute walks with Judy and 60-90 seconds of air squats or wall presses. EASY. Also, 1 hour of yoga if I can get to class!

p.s. I love not exercising :) and this diet does not call for any! But everyone knows exercise is important so we do what we can.

Here is the amazing Bean Salad recipe:

1 can kidney beans
1 can black beans
1 can garbanzo beans
1 can corn

Drain and rinse.

2 stocks of chopped celery
1 medium red onion chopped
1 medium tomato chopped

Add to beans and corn.

3/4 cup salsa
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup fresh lime juice (2 limes)
1 1/2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cumin

Mix in separate bowl and add to everything. Refrigerate.

Friday April 15, 2011

It’s April.

And it’s currently snowing.

We’re moving to California.

To be celebrities.

Well, maybe I’ll just be the celebrity.

Jake’s going to work for Google. Or Apple. Or somewhere cool.

Ahhhh, April snowstorms in Minnesota daydreams.

scanning the archives

April 2011: Just scanning the archives, while procrastinating doing taxes.

From April 2008

You grow up knowing what you know and it’s what you know….but then you realize that you know nothing at all.

I drove out to the suburbs tonight. I was invited to attend a Passover dinner with a friend. It was my first time. To a Passover dinner…not the suburbs.

The air smells so wide open there – I felt like I was on another planet. It is just so sprawling. The house was enormous and extravagant and the first floor was as big as my entire house. What do people do in those big houses?

As I drove home and exited on Snelling – I started to see the people. The homeless man with his sign, the hooded biker riding home, the men just hanging outside the bar on University. This is my home stretch I am only 6 blocks from where I fall asleep. It is compact and dirty and bright and loud….there are times of silence though when the sirens have stopped and the people have gone to sleep.

I missed Judy while I was gone. She was so excited to see me that her head smacked into my mouth and I might have a fat lip. It doesn’t matter though. She loves me. Gracie tried to come over and play with Judy right before I left – she rings the doorbell in the front now, she used to just knock at the back – anyway, I tried telling her that I was leaving and that she could come over tomorrow.

She was so disappointed and Liam had no idea what was going on. She kept saying, “but my dad is in the kitchen” and “we just ate dinner and my dad is in the kitchen.” She left with her head hung low, she was sad to go.

You grow up knowing what you know and it’s what you know….but then you realize that you know nothing at all. Or something like that.

From April 2009

I live in the United States of America.

But have I seen anything?

How is it that three miles from my Blair block neighborhood party, boards are nailed over windows? How is it that the same Blair block, in the 400′s, two people got shot? Shot with a real gun.

What about the 1300 block? What is so different about us?

I was in the SA (Salvation Army) the other day and I talked to six different people. As in six different conversations about dishes and Tupperware and missing glasses. I haven’t talked to so many people in months. I realized I was there for a good deal just like they were.

Anyway, walking through to the back, where her kitchen was just completed two days ago, I found a kindred spirit. She is a treasure finder. It ACTUALLY says that on her card. And her yard is a Wildlife Habitat. A WILDLIFE HABITAT IN HER YARD! I have been feeding peanuts to the squirrels…but also knocking down bird nests…where does that leave me? Anyway, she said ‘modular’ a lot, but it didn’t matter, she had sea glass hanging in her window.

In another basement, he wore a bow tie and told us of possible secrets behind the walls where pool cues hid and alcohol was drunk.

These are my neighbors.

I know you might not know what this all means, but it is okay. Don’t worry about the mud.

Just know that it is my home.

It is where I walk my dog and dream the dreams you dream about.

Just like you.

And, well, this next one, well – it speaks for itself:

From April 2010

Currently obsessed with The Real Housewives of New York City. I just love the drama.

April 2011: Still love the drama and watch all “The Real Housewives”!

asbestos test

Wednesday April 6, 2011

We have officially decided to remodel our small kitchen – we have big plans on a budget!

The first step is to get our old sheet linoleum tested for asbestos. We don’t know if we can remove the old flooring ourselves or have to hire someone to do the job (because of asbestos), either way we are anxious to get started. We are 99% sure there is original hardwood flooring underneath – which would be awesome.

We are sending our sample to a local lab today and hope to hear back soon!

Go for 1080p HD if you want!

Hammer reference here.
