paleo hey oh

Thursday March 22, 2012

It’s been almost a year since Jake and I starting thinking differently about how we ate. I honestly cannot believe how many poor food choices we were making. I was completely driven by sugar, cheese, and carbs – and felt hungry all the time. I was sluggish, negative, and totally sad.

Enough was enough. When I began this journey I had a personal goal to shed 10 pounds – but once I started to really feel differently that is what mattered most to me. Jake felt it too and we were hooked. Slow carb works but it isn’t a forever way of life.

We’ve been doing paleo for three weeks and it is going great. The transition has been way easier than we thought. The fruit and Greek yogurt – oh my goodness, what a treat. Have you ever had Greek yogurt? It is honestly the best thing and tastes like ice cream. Try it!

As you know, I love me some scones, breads, and cookies. It was really important to still be able to bake these things and have them be paleo friendly. No more all purpose flour or sugar. I’ve tried bread, muffins, and cookies from paleo friendly recipes and have been pleasantly surprised! The bread is sooo good and the chocolate chip cookies were delicious! It’s all about changing your taste bud muscle memory.

Also, we can eat whatever we want when we want — because if 90% of our diet is paleo we’ll get 90% of the benefits. We like that ratio.

Here are the hard facts:

April 11, 2011: 139.9
March 22, 2012: 126.5

Bam. 13.4 pounds lost.

Here are the intangible facts:

Eating foods that fuel my brain and my body feels amazing! Making deliberate choices about food feels too good, and I don’t ever want to go back.

Shitty food shitty mood.

I’m totally intrigued. I’ve been eating gluten-free for almost two years now, but I did it out of necessity because I developed an allergy. I’ve been cooking some vegan meals lately, but I don’t see myself going 100% vegan. Maybe Paleo is the way to go?

Kate, Sorry I didn’t comment sooner! Gluten free feels so good. Vegan is tough – I tried it for a month but couldn’t keep up. The “fake” meat proteins were sorta gross and soy just did not make me feel good. I felt like I was eating more processed foods than ever before and it just didn’t feel right. Paleo feels awesome. We buy organic meat that is grass fed or pasture raised. I feel better than I’ve ever felt before. Good luck with your journey!
