As tears roll out of my puffy eyes down my checks I miss her.

Last night after what seemed like an already bad day I found out that my dog, Patches, was put to sleep.

I could not stop crying. I really really couldn’t.

Even though I had said “good-bye” to her when I was home for Thanksgiving, I am still so sad.

I didn’t think it would be this hard.

  1. Jake says:

Patches was a great dog. She didn’t like me too much when she first met me, but a few years later she was licking my face like a popsicle.

I’ll miss patches too Anne, and I’m sad that she is gone.

  2. Kendra says:

Anne – I’m so sorry about your dog. I had a golden retreiver named Trouble for 16 years. I was away at college when she was put down and I cried for a month solid.
I got teary just reading that post.

  3. Mark says:

Anne – Greetings from Holland and an old friend from UW-L!

I doubt you recall but I lived in Coate Hall when you were an RA there. Just happened to find your blog when searching through some old website bookmarks. I used to visit Jake’s redscreen site for the excellent photography when I was just getting into photography as a hobby. I still enjoy snapping photos, and still have a lot to learn.

Anyways, I thought I’d drop a line to say hi. Too make a long story short since I haven’t kept in touch: went to UW-L for 3 years, transferred to UW-Whitewater and attended for 2 years, graduated in May, moved to the Netherlands working for the company I worked for as an intern. Still having a hard time believing the last item on that list.

I keep a blog at http://luminarium.typepad.com though I must admit there are some cobwebs there due to lack of updates. But I’ve got some photos there from some travels in Europe.

I’m really sorry to hear about your dog – it’s never easy to say goodbye to a pet, that is for sure. But otherwise it sounds like things are going well, which I’m glad to hear.

    Take care and tot ziens!

  4. Jayleigh says:

Thanks for your comments today. I am deeply sorry to hear about Patches. We have our own aging doggy and my heart breaks to think of a time without him.

God bless you during this time of mourning for a best friend.

  5. Cheryl says:

Oh, I am so sorry about Patches. It’s hard to people to lose pets. I am thinking of you.

  6. Teresa says:

    I’m so sorry, Anne.

  7. Christa says:

Oh Anne, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I just met Patches a few months ago and she was very sweet. It’s ok to cry until you feel better.

  8. Anne says:

    Jake, that made me smile.

Kendra, Oh wow, sounds like you know exactly how I feel.

Mark, Wow! Hi! I will have to check out your blog. Do you have a photo of yourself anywhere? I am trying to remember…..

Jayleigh, You always say the perfect thing. Thank you.

Cheryl, Teresa and Christa, Thank you for your thoughts.

Thank you all for sharing your stories and for your kind words. I do appreciate them so much.

  9. Marissa says:

I am so, so, so sorry. I know what that feels like. When we put my dog to sleep I was a wreck. I cried every day for 3 months straight. And I still think about her all the time (we put her down in 1998).

  10. Anne Arkham says:

I’m so sorry. Losing a pet is as hard as losing a human member of the family.

  11. LadyKRAE says:

Anne, I am sorry to hear about Patches. I know how it feels to love and lose a pet. When I found out that I had lost our Irish Setter there was a song playing on the radio. To this day I think of my dog and smile whenever I hear that song.

Take care Anne, think of the fun times you have spent with Patches.

  12. Anisa says:

i am so sorry! but i can tell that the emotion you feel about his loss means he was really loved. patches was lucky to belong to such great people.

  13. Ariel1980 says:

Wow, I know this isn’t easy for you. Loss sucks, for lack of a more elegant and comforting expression. I still have a very deep sigh every time I walk by the grave of Miss Kitty in a corner of my garden. It’s hard.

  14. ben ingman says:

It’s great that your family was able to totally embrace Patches as a member of the family while she was here. Cute picture by the way :)

  15. still_figuring_out says:
